Project description:

This is a four year Case studentship sponsored by the EPSRC and Procter & Gamble Ltd. The project builds on previous studentships which investigated the barrier function of human skin at different body sites and effects of niacinamide on skin health. The purpose of this project is to first establish a robust dermatopharmacokinetic profile of niacinamide using both in vitro and in vivo models and then to understand variables such as dose response, time of day of application, and pH optimization that could improve niacinamide’s efficacy breadth and depth. Publications from the project are strongly encouraged. The student will be expected to visit Procter & Gamble USA to present their research findings. They will be supported to attend a number of international and national conferences as part of their professional development, and will be joining a friendly and vibrant research community.

Main methods and techniques: Cell culture, RTqPCR, ELISA, BCA, 2D gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, tape stripping and trans epidermal water loss measurement.

The student stipend will be paid at UCL normal rates (stipend rate for 2019/20 is £17,009 with additional increments in Years 2, 3 and 4 of the studentship).

Person specification:

Applicants are expected to hold a first degree in the biological sciences (minimum 2.1) and experience with bioengineering techniques would be advantageous.

To be eligible for a full award, applications are invited from UK and EU citizens who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years immediately preceding the start of the studentship. Candidates must also have no restrictions on how long they can remain in the UK. UK/EU applicants who have not been ordinarily resident in the UK or an EU member state for the past 3 years may be eligible for a fees only award and are welcome to apply, but there may be some limitations in terms of the stipend.
