Applications are sought for a Research Associate position in the Quantum Materials Group, Department of Physics, University of Cambridge. 

The project will involve the study of correlated electron materials of interest including unconventional superconductors and Kondo insulators under high-applied pressures, low temperatures and high magnetic fields. The role will include designing and preparing of diamond anvil pressure cells to perform low temperature electrical resistivity measurements on various materials under high-hydrostatic pressures above 20 GPa. Analysis and interpretation of high-pressure measurements, often within collaborations, will be performed for publication in scientific research journals. The project will be based in the Group of Dr. Suchitra Sebastian (www.quantum-materials.phy.cam.ac.uk) at the Department of Physics, Maxwell Centre, Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, UK and will involve travel to international high magnetic field laboratories. 

Applicants will have a PhD in Physics or equivalent scientific background. Candidates should have demonstrable understanding of correlated electron physics in various materials, cryogenic knowledge, experience of designing and preparing transport measurements in diamond anvil cells under hydrostatic applied pressures above 20 GPa. Candidates should be able to design and prepare diamond anvil pressure cells to reach high-pressures under hydrostatic conditions and conduct low temperature measurements of electrical resistivity to be performed on various materials under high-hydrostatic pressures. 

Candidates will have experience of managing their own workload, working in close collaboration with researchers in a range of scientific domains, show excellent teamwork abilities and good communication skills. They will need to keep abreast of latest developments in areas of high-pressure and engage in continuous professional development. Candidates would need to conduct analysis of electrical resistivity data measured under high-pressures and low temperatures and prepare scientific research publications. Candidates should have a strong publication record in international journals and a track record of presentations at international conferences is desirable. 

Salary Range: Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609 (Grade 7). 

Fixed-term: The position is available from 1st November 2019 and is for 24 months in the first instance.
