The research fellow will contribute to a project in the CRC 990 (Collaborative Research Center 990, EFForTS, http://www.uni-goettingen.de/efforts) that investigates the ecological-socioeconomic trade-offs in different land-use systems in Sumatra, Indonesia. Specifically, the project will (1) develop a comprehensive accounting framework (Environmental and Social Accounting Matrix) to aggregate, synthesise, and link existing and future EFForTS data on socio-economic and ecosystem functions at the level of a local rural economy, and (2) evaluate the effects of land-use change scenarios and policies (e.g. certifications schemes, land management regulations) on ecological and socio-economic functions and on the trade-offs between them. The research fellow will be based in Hamburg, but will travel to the University of Göttingen, where the CRC is based, frequently. Further, some field research in Indonesia may be required.

The successful candidate will

  • pursue a targeted publication strategy,
  • be an active member of the GIGA, affiliated to the Research Programme “Growth and Development” and its Institute of Asian Studies

Your qualifications:

  • Excellent quantitative methodological skills, ideally relevant modelling experience
  • English-language proficiency

Part-time options will be considered, if so desired by the successful candidate. Diversity and the reconciliation of work and family life are of great importance to the institute. The GIGA promotes the equality of all genders.
