15 LEADERS FOR

HELMHOLTZ YOUNG INVESTIGATOR GROUPS 

At least € 300,000 p.a. for your group for five years | tenure option | world-class research infrastructures | customized leadership training 

Helmholtz contributes to solving major challenges facing society, science, and the economy through top-level scientific achievements in six Research Fields: Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies, Matter, and Aeronautics, Space, and Transport. With more than 40,000 employees at 19 Research Centers and an annual budget of around 4.7 billion euros, Helmholtz is the largest scientific organization in Germany. Its work is rooted in the tradition of the great natural scientist Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–1894).

The Helmholtz Young Investigator Groups program offers early scientific independence to excellent researchers. The funding is at least € 300,000 p.a. for five years with an option for a permanent position in case of a positive evaluation. The group leaders receive professional leadership training by the Helmholtz Leadership Academy.

Helmholtz Young Investigator Groups are generally established together with a German university. Many group leaders hold joint positions as professors during the funding period. 

Apply if you have:

  • between 2 and 6 years of research experience after your doctorate
  • international research experience
  • an exceptional scientific record
  • an innovative research project in one of the fields of the Helmholtz Association

Application procedure:

STEP 1: Please contact one of our 19 Helmholtz Centers. The Centers pre-select the applications and guarantee half of the funding.

STEP 2: The Helmholtz Centers nominate the selected applicants to the Head Office of the Helmholtz Association.

STEP 3: The application is subject to a scientific review process consisting of at least two written assessments and a presentation to an interdisciplinary selection panel in Berlin.
