About the team/job

EMBL is seeking an outstanding and experienced experimental Research Technician to join the ‘Systems Genetics and Precision Health’ group led by Dr. Lars Steinmetz. The group develops and applies genome-wide technologies to elucidate the genetic basis of complex phenotypes, the functions and mechanisms of transcription, and the genetic and molecular systems underlying diseases. The group works in an interdisciplinary manner across diverse projects, integrating experimental and computational biology.

Your role

The Research Technician´s responsibilities will include:

  • Cell biology applications, including handling of human cells, generation of stable cell lines, transfections, lentiviral transductions, performing of high-throughput genetic screens, flow cytometry, and microscopy.
  • Basic molecular biology, including molecular cloning, DNA/RNA preparation and analysis, generation of CRISPR/Cas9 libraries for genetic screens.
  • Testing, developing and evaluation of new tools and experimental protocols, in particular in the field of next generation sequencing (RNA sequencing, single-cell RNA sequencing, NGS library preparations).
  • Supporting members of the laboratory throughout their scientific projects. The Research Technician is expected to contribute to scientific projects at all stages, ranging from experimental design to data interpretation. Some work will be done in collaboration with the EMBL Genomics Core Facility to optimize the aforementioned protocols.
  • Training new group members and visitors in technologies and protocols used in the laboratory. Oversee supplies and equipment in the lab, routine administrative support.

You have

We are especially looking for a stellar experimentalist who already worked as a research technician. The successful candidate will have strong hands-on experience in cell and molecular biology techniques; experience with CRISPR/Cas9 genome engineering would be highly desirable. Applicants should have an appropriate University degree or equivalent certificate from a technical training college in a relevant scientific subject. 3-6 y of laboratory experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. The appointed candidate should have a strong interest in science, and be familiar with the biological mechanisms underlying gene expression. We expect the willingness to learn and develop to gain new knowledge and skills, and to contribute to the completion of project goals. (S)he will be capable to plan and execute experiments independently, but also enjoy being part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists within a highly collaborative international atmosphere. We expect the successful candidate to be well organized, with an attention to detail and record-keeping. Excellent communication skills and fluency in written and verbal English are essential.
