MRes Student will work on a research project about breaking through the immersion and the flow state of players through engaging them with a cognitive task and an interactive dialogue to support Responsible Gambling (RG). RG can benefit from advances in interactive and persuasive technology through accessing gambling behaviour data and tailoring software-assisted behaviour change to aid gamblers stay in control of their gambling experience.

The successful candidate will develop a design method and guidelines for building interactive and cognitive tasks during the online gaming and gambling activities to aid responsible, informed and conscious usage. The project will focus on how to use technology to interrupt flow states in problem online gamblers to reduce the harm caused to them.

The successful candidate will develop a mobile application that breaks the immersion and the flow state of players through engaging them with a cognitive task or an interactive dialogue such as a chatbot to increase awareness for potential behaviour change. Settings can be adjusted by the user to choose the right delivery or interaction method as direct methods are not always suitable for all user types.

The methodology of this project will involve reviewing and analysing existing documents and research in the literature. The results will be analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively as well as designed based on best practices around responsible gambling and digital well-being.

What does the funded studentship include?

Funded candidates will receive a maintenance grant of £15,225 per annum (unless otherwise specified), to cover their living expenses and have their fees waived for 12 months. In addition, research costs, including field work and conference attendance, will be met.

Funded Studentships are open to both UK/EU and International students unless otherwise specified.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates for an MRes Studentship should demonstrate outstanding qualities and be motivated to complete a MRes in 18 months and must demonstrate:

  • Outstanding academic potential as measured normally by an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • An IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 minimum (with a minimum 6.0 in each component, or equivalent) for candidates for whom English is not their first language and this must be evidenced at point of application.

The following skills are essential:

  • A degree in Computing, Psychology, Computer Science or a relevant discipline.
  • Expertise in relevant computing and programming skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Ability to communicate well at all levels within the team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines set by internal/external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work well both as a team member and on own initiative.
  • Flexible and adaptable with strong team working skills.
  • Ability to prioritise and work under pressure.
