Applications are invited for a PhD student to join the research groups of Dr Evans and Dr Carugo to develop novel methods of delivering bioactive gas using ultrasound-responsive nanodroplets to promote bone fracture healing.
Bone repair is a big problem in society that is set to get worse as the average age of people increases. Surprisingly often bones don’t heal as well as they should, leading to pain and immobility for many people. New treatments are urgently required to help improve this clinical problem. In this project, you will investigate ultrasound-responsive nanodroplets as a means of achieving this.
Acoustic nanodroplets vaporise when excited by ultrasound. This property allows us to use them for imaging organs and tissues, but can also be used to stimulate them. For example, they can be induced to release drugs or to induce therapeutically relevant biological effects at a desired site within the body.
You will help develop acoustic bubbles or nanodroplets that expand into bubbles when excited by sound waves. You will load oxygen and other molecules into the droplets and test whether they release drugs, and how this affects cells and tissues. You will specifically focus on their potential to stimulate stem cells to generate bone tissue.
This project is an interdisciplinary collaboration at the University of Southampton. You will work in a vibrant, multidisciplinary team based in the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering at the University of Southampton.
You will have a PhD, ideally with a background in bioengineering, but we encourage applications from talented individuals with backgrounds in biology, physics and chemistry. You should be a highly motivated candidate, with a keen general interest in the field of biomedical engineering.

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Funding: full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,285 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
