PhD Industrial CASE Studentship: Nanoscale Design of Battery Electrodes for Optimised Performance and Lifetime

Imperial College London

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: London
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students
Funding amount: See advert text
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 16th April 2020
Closes: 16th July 2020

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. studentship focused on nanoscale battery anode design within the Chemistry and Materials Departments at Imperial College London. Whilst the project will have a fundamental focus, it will contribute to the wider development of energy storage systems. As part of a collaboration with a major international industrial partner, the research will target the development of sodium ion battery systems for grid storage to support the implementation of renewable energies.

Imperial College London has pioneered the reductive chemistry of advanced carbons, including both nanotubes and graphene-related materials, for dissolution, processing and functionalization (see this recent review - Shaffer et al, Chem. Rev. 2018, 118, 7363−7408 - https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdfplus/10.1021/acs.chemrev.8b00128?src=recsys). The project will develop and exploit this state-of-the-art chemistry to improve the performance of carbon and hybrid anodes for sodium ion batteries.

Applicants should have a keen interest and solid background in carbon-based materials, such as carbon nanotubes or graphene, and their application in electrochemical energy storage. Experience of air-sensitive chemistry, polymer synthesis, or electrochemical characterisation will be an advantage. Applications are invited from candidates with (or who expect to gain) a first-class honours degree or an equivalent degree in Chemistry, Materials, Engineering or a related discipline.

The studentship will be supervised by Prof Milo Shaffer, co-supervised by Prof Mary Ryan, and will collaborate closely with Prof Magda Titrici. Informal enquiries and requests for additional information for this post can be made to: Prof Milo Shaffer via email: m.shaffer@imperial.ac.uk Project available until filled.

Funding Notes

Funding is available for UK citizens and EU citizens who have resided in the UK for the past three years. The studentship is for 3.5 years starting in October 2020, and will provide full coverage of tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of approximately £16,000 including an industrial CASE top-up.

Application: Please submit your CV and a cover letter, including full contact details of two referees, to Professor Milo Shaffer, m.shaffer@imperial.ac.uk
