About the Role
A highly-motivated postdoctoral researcher is sought to join the Cosmology and Relativity Group in the Astronomy Unit, School of Physics and Astronomy, at Queen Mary University of London. The applicant should be able and enthusiastic to contribute to new developments at the interface of gravitational wave science and cosmology. The successful researcher will join the group led Dr. Tessa Baker, as part of the ERC-funded programme SHADE.
A major focus of the position will be to develop the tool of gravitational wave statistical host identification, a new technique to extract information from gravitational wave sources that lack electromagnetic counterparts. Aspects of this could include (non-exhaustive list): developing theoretical predictions for gravitational wave sources, including the effects of deviations from General Relativity; modelling the galaxies that typically host gravitational wave events; simulation and detection of gravitational wave signals and their electromagnetic counterparts. This work will have important applications for cosmology and tests of gravity with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), and ground-based gravitational wave detectors.
The position is available on for three years, with the possibility of a further one-year extension subject to review. A starting date between 1st February 2021 and 1st October 2021 is negotiable.
To apply, you will need to have (or be close to completing) a PhD in Physics, Mathematics or a related subject, and a history of publications and seminars appropriate to your career stage. Existing expertise in gravitational wave science (broadly defined) is strongly desirable.

The post is based at the Mile End campus, London. It is a full-time, fixed term appointment for three years, with a possible one-year extension subject to performance. A start date between 1st February 2021 - 1st October 2021 is expected. The starting salary is Grade 4, in the range £34,220 - £38,084 per annum, including London Allowance.
