Tissue Culture Specialist

GW Pharmaceuticals - Growing

We seek an enthusiastic Senior Scientist to join our expanding plant breeding R&D team. You will be working in our research facility in Kent.  You will use your knowledge and experience of plant tissue cultures for the maintenance and cryopreservation of plants used in the production of pharmaceuticals, as well as the development of new lines for use in breeding programmes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement protocols for the maintenance of disease-free plants in tissue culture
  • Develop and implement protocols for cryopreservation of plants and their recovery
  • Research into other methods for accelerating GW’s plant breeding methods – e.g. the production of double haploids
  • Maintain a clean environment suited to the growth of plants in tissue culture
  • Maintain accurate records of results
  • Work in close partnership with colleagues in Plant Breeding and Horticulture
  • Exhibit highly effective teamworking and communication skills
  • Maintain the highest standards of health and safety
  • There will also be opportunities to work in other aspects of GW’s plant breeding programme.

Essential Skills:

  • PhD in Plant Sciences
  • Significant post-qualification experience of working with (preferably a range of) plants in tissue culture
  • Experience of developing and testing new protocols for use with non-model organisms
  • Working knowledge of the physiological responses of plants to different hormones
  • Highly competent with Microsoft packages including Excel

Desirable:

  • Experience with maintaining plants in a cryopreserved state
  • Experience in with synthetic seeds, embryo rescue or double haploid production
