About the team/job

ELIXIR is a distributed research infrastructure that supports the management, analysis and safeguarding of the increasing volume of data being generated by publicly funded research. ELIXIR's 23 Nodes connect hundreds of institutes across our European member states.

Your role

We have an opportunity for an experienced manager to join us as the new ELIXIR Chief Technical Officer.

As CTO you will establish and maintain effective relationships with national ELIXIR Nodes and other European partners to drive the development distributed services from Nodes across Europe.

You enjoy leading and developing people and as CTO you will lead a team of six experienced scientific coordinators. Reporting to the ELIXIR Director and an active member of the ELIXIR Hub Management Team you will combine your knowledge and experience of life science data with management and technical leadership to drive delivery and consolidation of ELIXIR's portfolio of technical and scientific projects by actively identifying and implementing synergies across the portfolio. Using your community-building and networking skills you will manage the needs from our many stakeholders and drive collaborations across Europe and globally.

The ELIXIR CTO operates in a matrix-managed, project-driven organisation. This requires you to lead, and be led, within multiple, outcome-driven temporary operational teams in addition to the formal line organisation. The ELIXIR CTO is a busy role with frequently changing priorities and extensive external contacts, so it is important that you are able to function comfortably in a team environment and can relate well to co-workers and the public. We work across multiple time zones with European and global partners. You will need to occasionally work irregular/extra hours including evenings, and exceptionally, weekends. The ELIXIR CTO needs to travel in Europe and internationally as necessary.

You have

As the successful candidate it is likely you will have:

  • University degree in the field of life-science, computer science, or similar
  • An advanced degree in one of these fields is a plus
  • Solid experience (ideally 5+ years) of bioinformatics / medical informatics research and service delivery
  • People management experience with demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams to deliver against agreed outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to predict and project technical developments and needs
  • A high level of literacy is required with documented ability to effectively communicate with excellent verbal and written English
  • Ability to professionally represent ELIXIR at public events, conferences and scientific meetings with attention to personal conduct and professional appearance.
  • Ability to work within a team

You might also have

  • Working knowledge to a professional level of additional European languages is a strong asset for the role

Why join us

At ELIXIR you will work in an international environment - in a multinational team and frequent contacts with colleagues and collaborators across Europe. The ELIXIR Hub is located at EMBL-EBI, Wellcome Genome Campus, with excellent facilities in an attractive campus environment.

ELIXIR staff also enjoy excellent campus sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club at a picturesque South Cambridgeshire campus set in 55 acres of parkland.
