Manchester Law School – Reader

The School seeks to make appointments that will align to the Education, Pedagogy and Citizenship (EPC) or Research, Education and Citizenship (REC) career pathways, which are both equally valued.

In order to meet the strategic ambitions of the School, we aim to make a transformative investment in REC focused positions. To advance these research ambitions of the School and align with key UCRKEs within the Faculty and beyond, we wish to recruit to the following broad areas of strategic need in terms of research interest.

Equalities & Human Rights / Sports Law / International Environmental Law / Intellectual Property and/or Media.

We would also welcome applications from those with an interest in aspects of legal technologies (either in pedagogy or practice).

Every appointment will be expected to contribute to, at least, one core unit and elective units at undergraduate or postgraduate level. We have areas of need across foundational and other quasi core subject areas – but have particular areas of need in Property subjects, Business Law, Social Welfare (including Family), Public and Criminal Law subjects – i.e. underpinning foundational subjects that can relate to any of the broad research areas above.

It is our intention to appoint to a number of positions, which will map onto the University’s EPC Pathway and contribute across the School’s academic and professional programmes. The successful candidates will be expected to lead on pedagogic innovation, development of best practice and dissemination within the School and externally. Successful candidates should also demonstrate an understanding of the importance of research within a University Law School context. We would particularly welcome applications from those with an interest in legal technologies.

Areas of need across the academic programmes reflect those core areas set out above.

Two of these EPC focused positions will be primarily focused on the delivery of our practitioner programmes and post-holders would be expected to contribute across LPC/BTC as needed. We would expect to appoint one post with a broadly Civil focus (contentious and non-contentious), and one with a Criminal focus. There will be a need to contribute flexibly across the School’s wider portfolio of programmes as and if required.

We would also welcome those with an experience and/or interest in developing postgraduate training and education programmes that respond to business needs in alternative roles in Law firms, such as professional support lawyer, legal technologist etc.

To apply, please submit your CV and Covering Letter via our application portal (available on the university's web site, accessed by the apply button). For informal enquiries, please contact Andrew Francis (Head of School) on Andrew.Francis@mmu.ac.uk.

Manchester Metropolitan University is committed to supporting the rights, responsibilities, dignity, health and wellbeing of staff and students through our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

We promote applications from all sections of the community, irrespective of background, belief or identity, recognising the benefits that a diverse organisation can bring and particularly encourage applications from groups which are underrepresented in the University workforce.

We recognise the benefits and importance of an environment that supports flexible working and are open to conversations about this, as well as any reasonable adjustments required throughout the application process.
