While it is important to flatten the curve, increasing the capacity of the entire health, research, and innovation ecosystem to respond to a pandemic is also important. The most successful response to a pandemic extends beyond containment and delaying spread; it increases the capacity of the entire health, research and innovation ecosystem. The primary concern for healthcare providers is that resources will become overwhelmed, leading to otherwise, preventable deaths.
We are seeking to recruit two positions, at either Research Assistant or Research Associate level to work in this project. The post is funded by the EU Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) DRAGON project and aims to improve the speed and scalability of diagnostics, adding the ability to predict outcomes early in the clinical course, and empowering citizens and patients to participate in their diagnosis, care, and preparedness will increase the capacity of health systems and accelerate the pace of research and innovation.
Duties and responsibilities
The main contribution of the group led by Dr Guang Yang to DRAGON project focuses on developing advanced approaches such as artificial intelligence, patient empowerment through personal health applications, and molecular profiling to increase the efficiency of the health, research and innovation ecosystems thereby increasing their capacity. In this project the aim is to elevate the capacity of health systems to respond to pandemics, including development of privacy-preserved and self-adaptive imaging biomarker extraction, multifactorial analysis and technical development of federated machine learning system.
There will be opportunities to collaborate with other researchers and PhD students in the DRAGON consortium, which includes 19 top-tier UK/EU research institutes and high-tech companies, including Cambridge University, Maastricht University, European Respiratory Society, European Lung Foundation and others
You must demonstrate as part of their application, how they meet the essential criteria required of the post. In particular, Research Associate applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and all applicants should have equivalent laboratory experience. In addition, applicants will need to have a strong machine learning background with proven knowledge and track record in one or more of the following research areas and techniques: generative adversarial models, federated or distributed machine learning, deep learning and its applications to medical image analysis, imaging biomarkers extraction, diagnosis and prognosis.
You must be close to completion of a PhD degree (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area, i.e., Computing or Engineering, for the Research Associate position, or a good first degree in related area for the Research Assistant position. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record and publications in the relevant areas, including in prestigious machine learning, computer vision and medical image analysis journals and conferences.
The post is full time and fixed term for up to 36 months.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.
