1. About Us
The School of Government at Sun Yat-sen University, consisting of Department of Political Sciences and Department of Public Administration, has its origins in Guangdong College of Law and Politics which was founded in 1905. After a century of development, the school now has grown into the largest and most renowned research institution for public administration in South China, with 49 full-time faculty members, 13 postdoctoral fellows or researchers, and 1,918 registered students at all levels (as of May 2020). Located in Guangzhou, one of the most dynamic and prosperous metropolitan areas in China, the school takes active part in all kinds of public activities serving the government and the society, and it plays a leading role in the policy-making, implementation and evaluation process in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The School of Government currently offers a full complement of degrees from undergraduate to PhD in political sciences and public administration as well as two professional master’s degrees in public administration (MPA) with one especially for international students from developing countries. The School aims to provide students with opportunities to specialize in political theory, comparative politics, Chinese politics, political communication, local governance, public budgeting and finance, social policy, human resource management and urban planning. The post-doctoral stations in the fields of public administration and political sciences have also been established.
The School houses many research centers and institutes, including Center for Chinese Public Administration Research, the only national-level public administration research institute sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China; Institute of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Development Studies, the national high-end talent tank for research on Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao; and provincial and municipal centers such as Center for Anti-Corruption Studies and Center for Local Governance and Public Policy. Supported by these research platforms, the School has successfully built up research teams and accomplished domestically and internationally influential achievements in public administration theory and practice, public budgeting and finance, social policy and social security, urban management, digital governance, food security, anti-corruption studies, justice theory, citizenship and state building, Hong Kong & Macao politics and governance, labor relations and political & commercial relations, local politics and local governance, and Chinese inter-governmental relations.
