In September 2020, the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham launched a new BSc Psychology in Dubai. We are seeking the appointment a Lecturer who will contribute to the development of the BSc, based in Dubai but with close liaison with the School of Psychology in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
The overall responsibilities for the role holder are to develop, and contribute to the delivery of the undergraduate Psychology BSc programme. This will involve contributing at a level commensurate with grade and on a sustained basis to the full range of teaching and administration responsibilities associated with the programme.
While applicants with research and teaching experience from across the discipline of psychology will be considered, the ability to deliver teaching support covering brain and cognition as well as research methods would be advantageous.
Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels; and (b) enhancement of the student experience and employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, and (b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods. The role will require co-ordination of curricula and learning pedagogy between Edgbaston and Dubai.
Teaching focussed role-holders should advance the practice of teaching in their modules within our School, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic support. They should also deliver excellent teaching that inspires students and is informed by discipline-based research. It is anticipated that the role will benefit from experience in teaching in an online blended environment and skills in developing digital and distance learning tools.
Management and administration is likely to involve contributions at Departmental and School level, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership (e.g. working groups) within the University. This may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, and business engagement, public engagement widening participation, schools outreach, or similar activities at Department/School level or further within the University.
• The successful candidates will have teaching experience at Higher Education in Psychology (with a preference for a candidate with experience in teaching Biology and Psychology.
• Normally, a higher Degree (usually PhD) in Psychology or a closely related discipline or equivalent professional qualifications and/or experience.
• In addition to a relevant doctoral/other qualification, it is expected that the appointees will have excellent communication skills and the ability to undertake inspirational teaching
• Proven ability to develop and manage learning, including the use of online resources, Digital tools and distance learning.
• Skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others successfully at all levels.
