The College Council wishes to make an election to a non-stipendiary Research Fellowship, tenable for three years and not renewable, to commence on 1 September 2021. The Fellowship is intended for researchers in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Geography.

The Fellowship is intended to provide an opportunity for a scholar at an early stage of their academic career to establish a successful research profile. The successful applicant is likely to be a holder of a post-doctoral research grant (such as those provided by the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, and the Wellcome Trust) or a salaried post-doctoral position, though the Committee will consider applicants in different circumstances.

The Research Fellowship is non-stipendiary, but the Fellow will be entitled to residential accommodation (subject to availability) or an office in College, and to Fellows’ dining and other privileges. Single residential accommodation would be rent-free, although subject to a monthly service charge (currently £90 per month for 2020-21; rates are reviewed annually). Couples accommodation may also be available (rent and rates available on request). For those choosing to live in private accommodation there is a non-pensionable annual living out allowance of £4,725 (rate for 2020-21). Research Fellows may apply for research grants of up to £1,000 per year (rate for 2020-21) to cover research expenses, including books.

The holder of a Research Fellowship will be permitted to teach for up to four hours per week, with priority being given to teaching for the College. Additional payment will be made for this teaching at standard University supervision rates.

All applications, including references, must be made using the online application form on the College website: https://webapps.sid.cam.ac.uk/aboutus/personnel/apply/. The closing date is 1 June 2021 for the receipt of the online application and 3 June 2021 for two supporting references. The latter must also be submitted using the online form. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that both referees submit the form prior to the deadline. Candidates will be asked to submit a piece of written work (of strictly no more than 5,000 words in length) with their applications and short-listed applicants will be interviewed. Interviews will probably take place in the final week of June 2021.

Please note that the College is unable to issue sponsorship under the Skilled Worker Visa route for this role as it does not meet the minimum salary requirements. If the successful candidate does not have the right to work in the UK, but does have a PhD, then they may be able to apply for a Global Talent visa. This is an applicant led process, and in that case the offer would be subject to the Global Talent visa being secured.

Enquiries should be directed to the Fellow Secretary to the Research Fellowship Competition, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, CB2 3HU (e-mail: research.fellowships@sid.cam.ac.uk).

The College reserves the right not to make an appointment.
