Research Associate in Dynamic Metal-Organic Frameworks

We seek to recruit an enthusiastic scientist with proven intellectual and technical abilities to work on a synthetic and analytical chemistry project within the research programme “Photogated nanofluidics: from single crystal diffusion control to water purification”. This 12 month position is funded by the Royal Society and Cardiff University and will be supervised by Dr Timothy Easun in the School of Chemistry, with the support of the Cardiff University Water Research Institute.

The overall focus of the programme is to synthesise new and existing stimuli-responsive and structurally dynamic metal-organic frameworks that can selectively and efficiently be employed for water purification.

The project has two aims. The first is to continue our work investigating the fundamentals of guest diffusion and flow within microporous metal-organic frameworks, with particular focus on photoresponsive materials. The second aim is applied, exploiting these materials in water purification systems that can extract toxic ions from water, using light to drive material regeneration.

The project will accelerate synthesis of new materials, perform scale-up and testing, and assist in the publication of existing and new results. The Research Associate will take a leading role in design, synthesis and testing of the most promising materials to emerge from the programme, developing both our fundamental understanding of guest flow and diffusion in nanoconfinement and the application of our materials to the extraction of contaminants from water.

Applicants must hold a postgraduate degree at PhD level in the fields of either metal-organic frameworks or relevant supramolecular photochemistry, or equivalent, or relevant industrial experience.

This position is full time (35 hours per week) and is available immediately for 12 months.

Salary: £33,797 - £40,322 per annum (Grade 6). We do not anticipate that an appointment be made above £35, 845 per annum (Grade 6.32).
