We are recruiting nurses from all fields, and midwives to conduct our Nursing and Midwifery Council OSCEs for international candidates, as part of a project funded by NHS Improvement and the Nursing and Midwifery Council. This project will run between June 2021 – February 2022 and staff will be required to cover evening and weekend shifts. 

The contract is fixed term, in line with the duration of the current test centre NMC expansion project however all contracts will be reviewed in early 2022.

If you are a nurse or midwife on the NMC register, and have time available on evenings or weekends, this could be an ideal opportunity for you to work within a team of other clinical assessors, and support staff. These shifts on evenings, Saturdays and Sundays will offer an enhanced hourly pay.

The post includes assessing the safe application of clinical skills by international candidates seeking registration with the NMC. 

We will offer training for this post, and when you are fully trained you will be able to prepare your test area for OSCE skills, undertake objective marking and moderation of assessments, using IT media and supportive technology.  Communicate and discuss results with lead assessors and colleagues.

About You

This post is suitable for:

  • All nurses, and midwives with the knowledge, skills and experience in clinical practice, who wish to contribute to the development of safe patient care, by ensuring that the nurses entering the NMC register are fit for purpose and fit for practice.
  • Nurses and Midwives who are at the point of retiring from clinical practice or education, but still wish to be involved in the making of the Future Nurse / Future Midwife.
  • We will also welcome applications from new graduates who may wish to consolidate their clinical skills, as part of their professional development. Supervision and support will be provided by our lead assessors.

Good verbal and written communication skills will be required to deliver effective OSCE assessment of candidates within the test centre

Evidence of Continuous professional development of your nursing skills in keeping with your NMC revalidation requirements.



  • Must have an active nursing registration with the NMC
  • Experienced in supporting students in clinical practice


  • First degree in relevant subject (or equivalent)
  • Post Graduate qualification in a related subject or proven clinical experience/expertise
  • Teaching qualification (e.g. PGCTHE) Nursing and Midwifery recordable teaching qualification
  • Have sign off mentor status or be close to achieving sign off status

The Competence Test Centre is part of the Faculty of Health, Education and Society.

We offer tests of competence which measures candidates against the current NMC standards for:

Our centre has expanded its facilities and will have the capacity to test over 45 candidates per day.
