Within the School of Biosciences, Dr Christopher Mulligan’s lab is looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) interested in using state of the art biochemical and biophysical approaches to explore the mechanism of a transporter family associated with metabolic diseases. This 3 year Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)-funded project will focus on the characterisation of substrate and lipid interactions of bacterial and mammalian members of the SLC13 protein family and how these interactions influence the mechanism.

Candidates should have a PhD (or be in the final stages of their PhD) in Biochemistry (ideally membrane protein biochemistry) or a related subject by the starting date of the position.

As Postdoctoral Research Associate you will:

  • contribute to the development of the research project to achieve key milestones in the research programme

  • contribute to the dissemination of research results through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations

To be successful in this role you will have/be:

  • a PhD in Biochemistry (ideally membrane protein biochemistry) or related relevant discipline or to be in the final stages of obtaining such a qualification by the starting date of the position
  • experience in protein expression systems and protein purification
  • experience in handling and quantifying data

The School of Biosciences is a vibrant, stimulating and welcoming environment for research and education within the Division of Natural Sciences. In REF2014, Bioscience at Kent was ranked 7th on the basis of ‘research intensity’, and the appointment of a range of new staff since 2014 has meant that research quantity and quality have risen still further. This is now an extremely active research environment.

The School of Biosciences is a welcoming and diverse environment that has been recognised with a Bronze Athena SWAN award.  We are keen to enhance the balanced, inclusive, and diverse nature of the community within the School and would particularly encourage female candidates to apply for this post.

Interviews to take place mid July 2021. The start date is flexible, a provisional start date is 1 October 2021.
