About the team/job

ELIXIR is seeking an experienced data scientist to coordinate and organise technical architecture and complex projects within the dynamic and international Human Genomics and Translational Data (HGTD) team at the ELIXIR Hub in Hinxton, UK.
This position is an exciting opportunity to become involved in many large, multi-million Euro research projects that are transforming the way that human genomic health data is managed across Europe and to drive scientific collaborations that improve the health of citizens, such as B1MG and EJP-RD. 

Your role

The main purpose of this role is to provide the coordination of technical activities and projects needed to deliver an ELIXIR-wide comprehensive approach to the management, archival, access, and analysis of sensitive human data consented for reuse in scientific research across Europe.
As HGTD Programme Manager, you will have a central role in developing and delivering a cohesive plan to enable secure cross-border access (federation) to sensitive human health data. You will also work with the ELIXIR Federated Human Data, Rare Diseases, and human Copy Number Variation Communities, and the five ELIXIR technical Platforms to drive the adoption and implementation of key products such as ELIXIR Beacon and Beacon Network, Federated EGA, ELIXIR AAI, and the RD-Connect Genome and Analysis Platform.
Reporting to ELIXIR’s Head of HGTD you will develop ELIXIR’s portfolio of projects in this area and participate actively in the development and promotion of best practices within ELIXIR. You will collaborate closely with colleagues in the ELIXIR Hub, as well as with colleagues at the 23 ELIXIR Nodes and other project partners throughout Europe to deliver projects and services.
You will be joining the team as part of the ELIXIR Hub, the organisational centre for ELIXIR: an intergovernmental organisation that brings together life science resources from across Europe.

The 3 main focuses, are as follows:

Provide coordination of ELIXIR HGTD related projects, service portfolio and programme:

  • Ensuring that project plan objectives, milestones, deliverables, and key performance indicators are successfully achieved.
  • Chairing, minuting or managing internal and external project update meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Providing scientific input and awareness of the bioinformatics landscape.
  • Reviewing and documenting progress and reports
  • Continually assessing impact.

Coordinate a technical roadmap for ELIXIR HGTD by:

  • Obtaining input and reaching consensus across the ELIXIR community and platforms, with regular reviews and updates.
  • Coordinating the implementation of this roadmap across the ELIXIR Nodes with key personnel at the ELIXIR Hub.
  • Effectively and proactively communicating outcomes, progress, and risks to colleagues at the ELIXIR Hub and across the Nodes Supporting the Head of HGTD and HGTD team, and ELIXIR partners to develop and coordinate the ELIXIR HGTD services portfolio.

Matrix-based task management of ELIXIR project team members with responsibility for the specification and quality of their contributions

  • Presentation to internal and external audiences. 

You have

  • A postgraduate degree in the life sciences or similar, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience in coordinating complex projects across a team or a number of partners to deliver against challenging goals and timelines is desired.
  • Ideally 3+ years experience in a biomedical (preferably bioinformatics) research environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Good understanding of the human data research field, working with bioinformaticians, software developers, and strategic management to deliver bioinformatic tools, services and interoperable standards. 

You might also have

  • Familiarity with network technologies, authentication standards, database management systems and data integration techniques would be beneficial.
  • Experience in developing community standards or involvement in data repositories is an asset.
