The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) strategically invests ~£75M per annum in eight specialist Institutes that provide national capability and expertise in strategically important areas of research.

It is essential that BBSRC ensures value for money and excellent scientific output from its investment in the strategically supported institutes, and that the research delivers high-quality outcomes and impact. To help achieve this, BBSRC conducts an Institute Assessment Exercise every five years. As part of the Institute Assessment Exercise, institutes submit proposals for future strategic funding which are reviewed by independent subject matter experts from academia and industry.

BBSRC are looking for someone who will manage a diverse portfolio of work that contributes to the effective delivery of BBSRC’s 2022 Institute Assessment Exercise. The role provides an exciting opportunity to work alongside some of the major advances in contemporary bioscience within the institute portfolio that are addressing key societal challenges, as well as interact with nationally and internationally recognised bioscience experts.

You will lead and coordinate cross-office planning activities in relation to delivery of the 2022 Institute Assessment Exercise, drawing on expertise from across various BBSRC office functions (e.g. peer-review delivery, science strategy, innovation, finance, estates, and communications). You will prepare guidance for researchers at the strategically supported institutes which clearly sets out the information required for the application and assessment processes, lead on the establishment of expert Institute Assessment Panels and develop the associated method of working for the panel meetings.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A degree in a biological (or related) subject, and/or have equivalent, relevant professional experience.
  • A demonstrable understanding of the current UK research, innovation and training landscape, including how bioscience research contributes to the delivery of wider benefit and impact.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills, with an ability to interpret and synthesise complex information, distilling multiple sources of evidence into well-structured and clearly articulated documents.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills to develop and implement creative solutions to complex problems (e.g. as part of assessment process design).

Choosing to come to work at UKRI means that you will have access to a whole host of benefits including a flexible working scheme, a Career Average Revalued Earnings pension scheme, 30 days annual leave allowance, access to employee shopping/travel discounts and salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme.
