Award and Eligibility
The Art History department at the University of Aberdeen is pleased to offer a PhD Scholarship as part of its foundation date celebrations. The department of Art History (then History of Art) was approved by the University Senate in 1970, with its first academic year of teaching occurring in 1971-72. The department sits within the School of Divinity, History, Philosophy and Art History.
This scholarship is open to students subject to Home/RUK rate of fees for a start date of January 2022.
This scholarship will cover, by fee waiver, home/RUK fees, with the home fees for 2021/22 being £4,500. The successful candidate will also receive a stipend of £6,000 per academic year.
Subject to satisfactory progress, the studentship will be awarded for three years. Details of the cost of study can be found by visiting: www.abdn.ac.uk/students/documents/Fees%20-%20PGResearch%202021-22.pdf.
Applicants must apply for admission with a project in the discipline of Art History that falls into the research areas of departmental staff on a full-time, on campus basis.
The successful applicant will undertake a package of training and career development opportunities. This will include a set number of hours of teaching or research assistance. The career development package will be phased in year-by-year and supported by relevant training.
Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit and potential for independent research, as evidenced by the candidate’s academic record, prior qualifications, proposal and references. Selection will be based on this evidence and the fit with the department of Art History.
The Art History department at Aberdeen operates with a strong interdisciplinary outlook. Its active researchers are furthering specialist knowledge and understanding in a diverse range of areas from medieval to contemporary times. More information about the Art History department is available online. Informal enquiries to individual staff members are welcomed.
Applicants must be classified as Home/RUK for fees purposes as set by the University of Aberdeen.
Applicants must hold, or expect to hold prior to commencement of studies, an undergraduate degree at UK first class or 2:1 honours level, or the international equivalent. It is preferable but not a requirement that you hold a Masters relevant to your chosen area of study. Other factors such as financial status and nationality are not taken into account.
Before you apply
Art History staff are ready to advise candidates on their proposals and fit with research areas and/or University of Aberdeen resources through informal enquiries.
Application will be via the PhD application portal. Further information on the process may be found at this website.
