Lecturer | Senior Lecturer in Fashion Design

JCA | London Fashion Academy

Founded by Prof Jimmy Choo, JCA | London Fashion Academy is seeking inspirational Lecturers, Senior Lecturers and Associate Lecturers to teach on and across our BA (Hons) and MA programmes in Fashion Design, Branding and Entrepreneurship programmes.

Joining us in our historic, and luxury fitted campus in Mayfair, you will bring with you well-developed and contemporary knowledge and practice of the current and emerging issues relevant to the teaching and professional application of Fashion Design, Branding and Entrepreneurship.

We are looking for lecturers with experience and understanding of garment/accessories construction, manufacturing and production, be able to assist students in the translation of 2D design into 3D outcomes, and  be able to teach a variety of established and emergent drafting and creative cutting techniques.

Ideally we are looking for designer entrepreneurs who themselves have expertise across the design process and skills and behaviours needed to establish, run and maintain successful fashion businesses.

Alternatively, you will have creative brand communication and or image experience in one or more of the following areas: Styling Photography, brand management, creative direction, and graphic design or promotion.

You will lead one or more modules and contribute to teaching across a range of modules and be expected to contribute to a growing research culture within the subject. You will also contribute to the management, administration and coordination of parts of the course and its development in terms of curriculum and teaching strategies.

You will bring with you, professional relationships and high profile industry contacts to support students in defining and developing their future career paths.

A postgraduate qualification or relevant professional experience is highly desirable.

Overview and Objectives of the Position:

JCA | London Fashion Academy is seeking inspirational Lecturers, Senior Lecturers and Associate Lecturers to teach across our BA (Hons) and MA programmes in Fashion Design, Branding and Entrepreneurship programmes.

Reporting to one of our Programme Leaders and / or the Director of Teaching and Learning, the successful candidate will teach across a range of modules, programmes, short courses and specialist pathways.

Main duties and accountabilities:

Aligned with the Academy’s mission, vision and published strategy and through consultation with the wider leadership team:

Student Experience

  1. Plays an active role in the student journey for each learner, ensuring that the modules and their assessments support the individual ambitions for each emerging designer.
  2. Actively seeks to give guidance to students with their educational and professional development.
  3. Contributes to the development of a sense of student community and acts as key contact for students.
  4. Oversees the operational delivery of course modules and acts proactively to address any emerging issues, escalating as appropriate.
  5. Actively participates in open days, induction and other student-facing forums.
  6. Responsible for ensuring the pastoral care and supervision of students.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment

  1. Designs and delivers innovative, high quality and challenging learning / practical experiences.
  2. Equips students with the skills, knowledge and attributes required by design entrepreneurs.
  3. Engages in critical reflection as a basis for improving performance.
  4. Provides effective feedback, support and guidance to students.
  5. Contributes to innovation in learning, teaching, assessment and curriculum development.
  6. Regularly engages in staff development activities relating to teaching, learning and assessment
  7. Provides effective feedback, support and guidance to students.
  8. Supervises individual and group based student activities, e.g. work based projects.

Quality management and enhancement

  1. Contributes to the development and achievement of quality standards and criteria.
  2. Takes part in initiatives to improve quality of educational provision and access to higher education.
  3. Analyse data on student progression and achievement with a view to identifying issues and trends and formulating appropriate action in response.
  4. Where appropriate lead on the process of course development, minor modifications, major changes, validation, revalidation and review

Professional Practice and Scholarly Activity

  1. Maintains own professional practice and regularly engages with wider industry.
  2. Develops and actively shares networks of useful contacts both within and outside the Academy
  3. Engages in external debate, ensuring relationships and currency with the subject community.
  4. Contributes (as appropriate) to practice-based research and scholarly activity.
  5. Identifies opportunities for income generation and/or entrepreneurialism.

Teamwork and Communication

  1. Works effectively with colleagues at all levels and contributes to the achievement of team objectives.
  2. Develops collaborative relationships across teams and more generally, the Academy.
  3. Maintains dialogue with managers in the performance of post responsibilities.
  4. Develops networks of useful contacts both within and outside the Academy.

Personal effectiveness

  1. Seeks ways to improve efficiency and quality and motivates and encourages others.
  2. Contributes to achievement of organisational goals.

Business Effectiveness

  1. Actively engages with industry and seeks to attract partnerships, collaborations and mentors.
  2. Engages with the relevant business and professional environments to develop and promote relationships that will enhance income generation (e.g. short courses, consultancy, etc).
  3. Promotes student learning, scholarly work, and self-development in a real world context.

Personal Attributes

  1. In addition to the required educational and professional experiences expressed for the post, ideal candidates would be ambitious, innovative and entrepreneurial.
  2. Candidates would not only be comfortable with change management, they would positively thrive in exciting dynamic environments.
  3. Experience of both public and private HEI’s would be advantageous but not essential.

These duties may evolve in line with the changing strategic objectives of the Academy and University. Specific objectives will be agreed through the Academy appraisal process.
