NanoSyrinx Ltd

Location: University of Warwick, Coventry
Employment Type: Full-time (flexible), with some home working
Compensation: Competitive at £30,000-£40,000, subject to experience level and negotiation. Offers may be made at a higher pay grade (£40,000-£50,000) for Senior Scientists depending on experience level.

ROLE MISSION

As the company grows, our need to be able to scale our processes also grows. During the next phase of technical development, we will be advancing our ability to produce proteins rapidly and at appropriate scale for ever more ambitious experiments and projects. Consequently, we are looking for an individual to join our team and take ownership of scaling our platform.

In this position you will be expected to:

  • Support various aspects of the technical development work ongoing across the team, by providing material to be used in assays, or for partner work.

  • Work with the molecular biology team to create bioreactor-stable and efficient production systems, by optimising growth conditions, cell lines and expression constructs.

  • Work as a unit with the downstream protein purification team to devise and optimise high yielding, high purity production methods, and develop routine analytical packages for quantification and QC.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

As a Process Development Scientist, you will be primarily responsible for guiding the development of the NanoSyrinx platform from a scalability perspective. This includes establishing high-yield and efficient bioreactor format expression protocols, as well as contributing to strain and platform genetic optimisation. You will build on this knowledge to ensure a steady supply of research material to the other members of the team and to support partner projects. You will work closely with the other members of the team to devise a compatible and scalable process for the next phase of the company development.

For this role, the following criteria are:
Qualifications
Essential
  • PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, such as chemical biology, bacteriology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or similar related field.
Skills, Experience & Background Knowledge
  • Bacterial culture, particularly for large format expressions such as bioreactors.
  • Experience with feedstock and expression optimisation, as well as strain background and expression construct optimisation
  • Experience with ultrafiltration/TFF/depth filtration, and other common bacterial harvesting techniques.
  • Knowledgeable about the latest developments and techniques in the field.
Desirable
Skills, Experience & Background Knowledge
  • Prior experience of working in industry/a commercial setting will be a significant advantage for an application for any of our positions.
  • Familiarity with Akta FPLC chromatography and downstream processing as well as analytical methods for protein characterisation would be a major plus.
  • Prior experience of the expression and purification of large biomacromolecular complexes (such as phages or viral vectors) would be advantageous.
  • Experience of scaling and purifying proteins for clinical purposes and familiarity with GMP compliance standards will be an advantage.Familiarity with protein modelling software, particularly UCSF Chimera would be an advantage.
  • A deep understanding of ‘synthetic biology components’ for strain optimisation, such as improved promoters and vector backbones, would be ideal.

Additionally, for all our roles, the following criteria are:

Essential
  • Teamwork It is almost a cliche, but the ability to work effectively in a close-knit, small, and dynamic team will be critical to the company’s success, particularly in the short term.
  • Initiative You must also be able to demonstrate initiative, overcoming novel challenges and problems in your day-to-day work both alone and with the team.
  • Detail Attention to detail is required in all aspects of the job, whether that be working safely in laboratory space, or writing up experimental procedures and data in lab books.
  • Communication An ability to communicate effectively with others, particularly regarding the presentation of scientific data at an appropriate level. This includes, for example, the ability to create effective and compelling presentations of data, the ability to produce informative figures, slides and documentation.
  • Agile Ability to work to deadlines, particularly when more than one project may demand time commitment.
  • Up to date Be knowledgeable about the latest developments in your respective discipline, and be able to bring forward suggestions about new methods to incorporate into our processes.
Desirable
  • Experience Prior start-up experience, and a general enthusiasm for science commercialisation/entrepreneurship would be advantageous.
