The University of Dundee is an extraordinary university, presenting a unique blend of gold-standard teaching, world-class research, and one of the UK’s best student experiences. As a high-performing academic community at the heart of a thriving city, the University is home to 17,000 students and over 3,000 staff. We are a Scottish institution on the global stage, with a clear mission to transform lives around the world.
A global perspective lies at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to bringing the world to Dundee and taking Dundee to the world. With our 350+ active agreements with international partners in 40+ countries, our students benefit from curricula enriched by global context. Strategic academic partnerships include the new DII-CSU collaboration, as well as our Joint Educational Programmes at Northeastern and Wuhan Universities, and our joint degree with the National University of Singapore. Dundee is the only UK institution to have three Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE) approved joint partnerships with three different institutions in China that fall within the 42 universities designated to become World Class Universities. DII-CSU establishes double awards between Dundee and CSU, engaging the disciplines of Civil Engineering, Computing, Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics at both universities. The DII is expected to teach 300 students per academic year. In seeking our inaugural Director, we are offering an outstanding opportunity to lead on one of our most high-profile and ambitious international partnerships.
The Director will lead the strategic development of the Institute, working alongside their equivalent at CSU to ensure the successful delivery of the partnership. Living near Dundee or Changsha, they will be based in the School of Science and Engineering, reporting to the Dean and School Executive and with accountability to the VP (International). Both institutions are fully committed to developing the DII as a centre of collaborative research excellence, so the Director will have a key role in recruiting academic staff and marshalling resources to realise that research potential. All of the CSU disciplines taught within the partnership are ranked top 20 in China (THE), and Dundee also has highly REF ranked disciplines at the heart of DII.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a substantial track record of achievement as an academic, covering teaching, research and professional practice in a subject area relevant to the Institute. Experience of academic leadership within an organisation of comparable size and complexity is a must. We are seeking someone who has worked with international partner institutions and who has a robust understanding of quality assurance and academic standards within the UK and (ideally) Chinese HE systems. A willingness to travel regularly between Scotland and China, plus working fluency in Mandarin (or the ability to achieve it rapidly), are essential requirements of the post.
We are an inclusive university and look forward to receiving applications from a diverse range of backgrounds. If you share our commitment to excellence and embrace our values and global ambitions, then we would love to hear from you by the closing date of 5pm on Friday 22 October 2021.
