A bit about Journalism at MediaCityUK…

Journalism is a practical course that fuses practice and theory to produce students who work collaboratively to develop the skills and mindset to succeed in the industry. We’ve just produced another cohort of great graduates who did not let recent industry restrictions get in the way of a good story. Our award-winning students go on to thrive in industry, finding work with our neighbours at MediaCityUK and beyond.

Our degrees emphasise creativity in practice and project work with industry which also fosters collaboration between different subject disciplines. Our Masters programme is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and our two biggest journalism programmes by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC).

So, what will the role involve?

The main thrust of this role is to inspire our budding journalists to produce original, innovative, imaginative work, particularly for our Salford Now community site. Lecturers in this role will have industry contacts to bring to our newsroom for postgraduate and undergraduate students. You will be determined to create employable, noteworthy graduates. To achieve this:

  • You will be an experienced journalist with an interest in digital developments
  • You’ll be a great communicator who can share your passion and skills with the next generation of journalists
  • You’ll enjoy connecting with people within the university and beyond
  • You’ll be big on co-creating and collaborating with a wider team.
  • You’ll obviously be committed to delivering and promoting an amazing student experience, and will be able to demonstrate an understanding of, and empathy with, the needs of a large and diverse student community.

Please ensure you provide evidence in your cover letter/personal statement of how you meet the criteria in the attached person specification.

What’s in it for you?

With more than 200 languages spoken across Greater Manchester, we want to create an inspirational, inclusive learning and working environment, celebrating the diversity of our University community in our everyday conversations. Our student population is already incredibly diverse and we want to ensure this is reflected across our colleague profile as well.

A varied benefits package is available through ‘MySalford’ where you can tailor your benefits to suit your own lifestyle – everything from additional annual leave, savings on High Street shopping, travel discounts as well as health and wellbeing support. To maintain work/life balance, when appropriate you can connect to work from wherever you are. Whether it’s MediaCityUK, our Peel Park Campus, or your couch at home, the tools are there for you to do your best work. Flexibility on working from home is supported where possible, however the role will be based on the University of Salford campus.
