Practical support is available from the Study team to advise on data and analysis plans, communication and impact strategies. Fellows undertake projects based on Understanding Society data or methodological challenges.

Applications from experienced researchers and early career researchers are welcomed. The value of the Fellowship is up to £70,000 for staff and dissemination related-costs.

About the Study

Understanding Society is one of the largest household panel studies in the world and a major infrastructure investment for UK health and social sciences. Please see www.understandingsociety.ac.uk for more details.

About the Fellowships

In this round of funding we are seeking applications on two themes: event histories and mixed mode measurements. You can find the full call for applications on our website: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/research/fellowships

Applications will be assessed on their scientific merit and potential for Study resource development.  Any researcher based in a higher education institution is eligible to apply (except the University of Essex), but people can only have an Understanding Society Fellowship once, so previously successful applicants should not apply. We welcome applications from early careers researchers (< 3 years post PhD) who should also identify a mentor in their own institution.

Funding will be provided for the Fellow’s salary, including NI and pension costs for up to 12 months (full- or part-time). The planned project must be achievable in the timescale of the project, and the application should demonstrate this.

Application:

Before applying, please read the full call for Fellowships.

You are strongly advised to discuss your ideas with a member of the Understanding Society team in advance of submitting your application. Please contact Victoria Nolan: vlnolan@essex.ac.uk to facilitate a discussion with an appropriate team member. A signed statement of support from your Head of Department must be included.

The application form can be downloaded from our website.

Closing date for applications:  25 October 2021

Date of interviews: week commencing 22 November 2021
