Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 22nd September 2021

Job Ref: 9546

The University of York launched the School of Digital Creativity and Performing Arts in August 2021, combining the thriving departments of Music and Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media.

Arts events are central to the activities of both departments and will continue to be a core component of the new School. With 40+ performances each season, plus related talks and workshops, our existing public University Concert Series hosts internationally renowned musicians and provides a showcase for the Department of Music’s many high-quality ensembles. We plan to extend the remit of the University Concert Series in order to embed it in the new multidisciplinary School and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. We also plan to expand our teaching and expertise in the area of the Creative Industries; this role will connect our teaching in the area of the Creative Industries with the curation of arts events in the new School.

You will curate exciting seasons of concerts, performing arts and other cultural events that will inspire students and the wider public, and that will contribute to the University’s research, teaching and public outreach excellence (0.5 FTE). You will manage all aspects of this process, including artist contracts, and will build strong relationships with performing arts and cultural organizations/networks locally and further afield. In addition, you will work as an Associate Lecturer in our new and dynamic area of Creative Business, contributing to our new MA Management in the Creative and Cultural Industries and the BA Business of the Creative Industries (0.5 FTE). You will be able to carry out both roles and will be available to start in January 2022, or soon afterwards.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • You will have professional experience in the performing arts sector and/or a qualification in arts management
    • You will have a degree related to music or a performing arts/creative industries subject
    • You will have experience in planning, programming and delivering public performing arts events that include concerts
    • You will have an appropriate academic teaching qualification or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice
    • You will be able to design and deliver teaching material across a range of modules and programmes related to Creative Business; evidence of successful teaching and student supervision would be an advantage
    • You will ideally have experience – academic or professional/industrial – of management or project leadership, and/or of handling financial or legal business issues
    • You will have highly developed oral and written communication skills
    • You will have a commitment to excellence and collaboration
