Based within the Student Services Directorate, the University Student Futures (SF) Service (formerly Careers) plays a lead role in developing confident, employable graduates, who are highly regarded by graduate recruiters, and who, in addition to a fulfilling academic programme, have had the opportunity to acquire the full range of attributes and competencies that allow them to become well rounded and employable graduates and citizens.

The Student Services Directorate is a values driven department and as such the post holder will be required to uphold and adhere to these values and in turn the Student Futures service’s four key principals:

A service which is:

  • quality assured and data driven
  • proactive, agile and dynamic
  • innovative, creative and supportive
  • student focused

As part of the SF service, the post-holder will act as an interface between students/graduates, central careers provision, academics, employers, and sector/professional bodies and networks; ensuring an employability-enriched curriculum, by complementing competency-based provision and effective career planning designed to support graduate success.

Responsibilities and Requirements

We are seeking to appoint a qualified and experienced careers guidance professional with experience of working in Higher Education or a similarly complex education environment.

  • To work principally with university academic departments (with a specific faculty focus), providing expertise and specialist career consultancy to senior managers and academics; engaging them in operational discussions regarding the employability of their students/graduates
  • To work with a range of colleagues in academic units (with a faculty focus) to provide analysis of challenges facing students/graduates in relation to career choices and transition to the graduate labour market; developing innovative and creative solutions; and implementing bespoke plan(s) of action; taking advantage of one to one and group-based provision.
  • To deliver high-quality, innovative, tailored careers provision and developing partnerships to support the strategic objectives of the academic area, directorate and service area:
  • Marketing messages communicated by information and operations team.
  • Facilitating employer engagement and the sharing of relevant graduate/placement vacancies.
  • Arranging tailored events within departments or faculties by prior agreement.
  • Presenting data and information to departments, helping them to interpret and understand the data, so it can be used in recruitment and student engagement in employability.
