Working as a part of the Supercomputing Wales consortium Swansea University is seeking a Senior Domain-Specific High Performance Computing Research Software Engineer to support the constantly growing HPC activity and research community at Swansea University.

Supercomputing Wales is a strategic programme of investment in Higher Education intended to change the way supercomputer facilities are used to support research activities in Wales. The programme is led by Cardiff University, in a consortium with Aberystwyth, Bangor and Swansea Universities.

Expertise Areas

To fill these roles, Swansea University is looking for candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:


The holders of these positions should have a thorough understanding of Computational Fluid Dynamics and/or Aerospace Engineering and/or Advanced Manufacturing, including making use of programming, in particular on High Performance Computing platforms. 


The holders of these positions should have a good practical or theoretical background and understanding of Bio-Informatics and/or Health Informatics, with experience in computer modelling using High Performance Computing platforms and/or analysis of large data sets.

3. Science

The holders of these positions should have working knowledge of one of (a)Computational Physics (and in particular, Lattice Gauge Theories); (b) Remote Sensing; (c) Visualisation techniques. In addition, they would have a high degree of competence in High Performance Computing programming techniques and/or analysis techniques applied to large data sets.

It is anticipated that, while starting with specific expertise in some areas, during the course of the project the Senior Research Software Engineers will develop expertise in other areas, thus gaining the ability to assist a wider community of HPC users. Hence, commitment to continuous professional development is an essential part of these roles.

Person Specification

  1. A PhD or equivalent in an engineering, medicine or science discipline and at least two years of post-doctoral or equivalent (e.g. industrial HPC-related) experience in a relevant discipline or sector
  2. Experience in one or more of the following technical areas:
    • Aerospace Engineering
    • Bioinformatics
    • Computational Fluid Dynamics
    • Computational Physics
    • Health Informatics
    • Remote Sensing
    • Rheology
    • Visualisation
  3. Experience in the use of Big Data and/or High-Performance Computing Platforms such as Hadoop clusters, Beowulf clusters or special-purpose HPC machines.
  4. Experience in a high-level computing language suitable for HPC platforms such as C, C++ or Fortran and/or in scripting techniques for HPC using Perl, Python, Matlab or R.
  5. Good working knowledge of HPC or Big Data software, libraries and extensions such as CUDA, MPI, OpenMP or Hadoop
  6. A track-record of publications in line with the previous career path
  7. The ability to exhibit a degree of independence in terms of specifying the focus and direction of research software engineering effort
