Research Technician

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) - High Throughput Crystallization Laboratory

About the team/job

A Research Technician position is available at the High Throughput Crystallization Laboratory (HTX Lab) of the EMBL Grenoble Outstation. The HTX lab is one of the largest platforms for automated macromolecular crystallization screening in Europe and is offering services through the EC-funded project iNEXT Discovery programme and Instruct-Eric. The Marquez Team has developed automated pipelines for fragment screening through X-ray crystallography based on the CrystalDirect technology and the CRIMS software that they apply to study targets of biotechnological and biomedical relevance. The successful candidate will contribute towards the operation of the HTX facility as well as the development of innovative methods in protein crystallography.

Your role

We are looking for a highly motivated person with experience in protein crystallization as well as the operation of robotic equipment and with a strong interest in methods development. Experience in protein crystallography and fragment screening will be highly appreciated. You will cooperate with other Team members towards the operation of the HTX facility, further development of our automated crystallography and fragment screening pipelines and will contribute to research projects. This will include:

  • Operation of the automated crystallography platform comprising automated liquid handling, imaging and crystal harvesting robotic systems. Liaison with HTX lab users.
  • Contributing to further development of automated crystallography pipelines for fragment screening based on the CrystalDirect technology and the CRIMS software.
  • DNA cloning, protein expression and purification and protein crystallography will be performed as part of the internal research projects
  • Additional tasks will include the management of orders and consumables for the HTX laboratory and general management and maintenance of robotic equipment (arranging with external companies for repairs when necessary).

Moreover, you will participate in research projects involving fragment screening on targets of biomedical relevance.

You have

A degree in biochemistry (Masters, Bachelor degree or equivalent) or a related field from a technical school or university. Under specific circumstances candidates with a PhD and publications who wish to change their career path can also be considered. Excellent skills in protein production for structural studies and significant experience in protein crystallization and the use of robotic laboratory equipment are required. Experience in diffraction data collection or fragment screening will be highly valued. The ability to work within a team and communicate with users of the crystallization facility is essential. You should be willing to acquire further skills and contribute to the development of new methods. Fluency in English and good computer skills are mandatory. We are looking for a motivated person with a desire to work in an international environment and to contribute to high quality research and services.

You might also have

Experience in structural analysis through macromolecular crystallography, ligand screening or the analysis of small molecule-protein interactions.

Why join us

This post offers a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and multidisciplinary team and contribute to the development of innovative methods with impact in biomedicine and biotechnology within a highly international environment.

With 27 member states, laboratories at six locations across Europe and thousands of scientists and engineers working together, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a powerhouse of biological expertise. The intergovernmental organisation, headquartered in Heidelberg, was founded in 1974 with the mission of promoting molecular biology research in Europe, training young scientists, and developing new technologies. EMBL currently employs 1800 people in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), and Rome. Publishing hundreds of research articles and hosting dozens of conferences every year, EMBL is pouring out biological insights, and training Europe’s future scientific talent.
