EMBL is a leading international molecular biology research organization with major activities in advanced training, technology development and scientific service provision.

EMBL is looking for a research technician to provide technical support for production of transgenic Drosophila and oversight of the Drosophila facilities. This includes maintenance of Drosophila population cages, maintaining the fly food inventory, ordering and costs, and liaising with the fly kitchen personnel. The candidate will join the group of Dr. Anne Ephrussi and will provide this service to all fly labs at EMBL. At present there are 3 full-time fly labs in Heidelberg, in the Developmental Biology and Genome Biology Units, as well as occasional users in other EMBL Units including at other EMBL sites. For a skilled person this will take approximately half time, but we anticipate that it may take some time to reach this skill level. Once this has been achieved, additional opportunities in molecular biology, cell biology and genetics will be made available.

Your role

  • preparation of DNA and injection of Drosophila embryos to produce transgenic animals
  • maintenance of Drosophila stocks
  • basic Drosophila genetics, mapping transgene insertions, constructing genetically defined strains
  • developing and implementing new transgenic technologies

You have

  • A Technical Assistant certificate or a university degree preferably in biology or related field
  • Experience with working with Drosophila and basic fly genetics
  • Fluency in English
  • Strong organizational skills

You might also have

  • Prior knowledge of Drosophila embryo injection
