About the team/job

The Vertebrate Gene Nomenclature Committee is an extension of the established HGNC project, and is responsible for assigning standardized names to genes in selected vertebrate species.

The successful post-holder will be responsible for developing and maintaining the VGNC website using similar templates and frameworks as the HGNC website, developing and extending the HGNC/VGNC REST API and creating other tools and services to expose the data to the public.

Your role

The successful post-holder will be working alongside a team comprising one other full stack developer and 6 curators. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining the VGNC website using similar templates and frameworks as the HGNC website, developing and extending the HGNC/VGNC REST API and creating other tools and services to expose the data to the public. They will also be responsible for developing and maintaining internal web tools, which the VGNC curators and collaborators will use to check and submit data for individual genes and gene groups. A significant part of the role is developing and maintaining the pipelines responsible for mapping cross-references, creating automated nomenclature calls, and exporting the data to the public services.

The VGNC project interacts with other resources hosted at the EMBL-EBI, particularly Ensembl and UniProt, and other international organisations and resources, so the post-holder must be confident in liaising with members of these projects. In collaboration with the rest of the VGNC and HGNC team members, the post-holder will be expected to interact with users of the VGNC, answering helpdesk questions and presenting the project at conferences and other meetings.
