The Butler and his team look after the College’s Senior Common Rooms (those rooms used by the Fellows) and are responsible for the provision of excellent services and presentation to members and guests using them.

The team also are involved in the management of the College’s fine wine cellar and assist in choosing wines for events and dining. The Butler’s Assistant can expect to learn a great deal about fine wines in this role; there may even be an opportunity to take a wines and spirits course to further your learning and role.

Are you passionate about delivering the best possible food and beverage service? We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable person with a flexible approach to work. Previous experience of dealing with the public in a customer service role would be advantageous, although training will be given in serving silver-service meals and drinks, including fine-dining dinners, taking charge of small events, and cleaning and setting up food and beverage areas in the College.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To assist in the preparation of the Senior Common Room, New Dining Room, Hall and other rooms, ensuring that these have been laid according to the functions and setup required
  • To use the relevant booking and event management systems to obtain information and prepare for events
  • To serve meals, snacks and beverages,waiting on and clearing tables, to the exacting standards required by the Butler and Catering Manager, including silver service at High Table Dinners
  • To assist in the management of the wine cellar, including deliveries, usage and access, and assisting in maintaining accurate records for wine stock
  • To prepare and serve alcoholic and soft beverages in accordance with the 2003 Licensing Act
  • To deal with customers in a friendly and helpful manner and pass on customer feedback to the Butler as required
  • To be able to explain to customers the name and ingredients of each dish prepared on site
  • To stock and replenish food, drink and crockery as required, and assist the Buttery team as required and when directed by the Butler
  • To assist in wash up operations
  • To accept delivery of goods and sign for them if required to do so
  • To assist in ensuring all equipment is in safe working order and to report any defects to the senior supervisor on duty
  • To undertake any training as required

This is a permanent, full-time role of 39 hours per week on a rota basis, including weekends, evenings and possibly some split-shift working when required.

The salary is £19,834 per annum (equivalent to £9.78 per hour).

The College offers a range of benefits including 34 days holiday entitlement, a contributory pension and a subsidised travel scheme (conditions apply).
