Department

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful departments at York, renowned internationally for our research. We strive to conduct research at the cutting edge of the chemical sciences and therefore seek to appoint to a lectureship an individual with a proven research interest in applying machine learning / big data methods to chemical problems. We are open to applications in any area of chemistry and expect the individual to make strong research connections with other research groups across the department.

Role

We welcome interest from talented academics with an impressive research profile and a collegiate approach to their work. They should have a strong background in chemistry but be advancing machine learning / big data methods in their research.

Main activities include:

  • Developing research objectives, projects and funding proposals and managing individual or collaborative projects applying machine learning / big data approaches to any area of chemistry, leading to the production of original outputs and to dissemination.
  • Reaching out to collaborators, attending conferences, engaging in knowledge exchange and managing and guiding the work of staff and research students.
  • Designing, developing and delivering innovative teaching and assessment activities across a wide range of chemistry modules both core and optional; taking responsibility for the quality of provision, providing feedback and critically reviewing activities and identifying areas where revision or improvement is needed.
  • Undertaking academic supervision of students and acting as a research supervisor.
  • Undertaking effectively a range of departmental administrative and managerial responsibilities including the duties of a Programme Director and Module Co-ordinator, contributing to recruitment, supporting other staff and developing contacts.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • PhD in Chemistry or closely related subject and appropriate academic teaching qualification or willingness to complete this.
  • Specialist knowledge of applying machine learning / big data approaches to chemical problems.
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals and contribute to high-quality research, with evidence of dissemination.
  • Well-developed analytical, IT and communication skills with the ability to present at conferences.
  • Knowledge, ability, experience and commitment to designing and delivering teaching and learning at undergraduate level chemistry to enthuse and engage students.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
  • Commitment to and understanding of Equality and Diversity Issues.
  • Demonstrable capacity for creative thinking and planning with attention to detail, a positive attitude and commitment to personal development.
