The School of History, Classics and Archaeology (HCA) is one of the great world centres for the study of the human past. We are a diverse community comprising the three subject areas of History, Classics and Archaeology: each of these is home to a very wide range of scholars, with research and teaching interests embracing many different periods, areas and themes.
Across these three subject areas there are currently over 170 staff, 1700 undergraduate and 600 graduate students. Learning and teaching are central aspects of our community and its purpose; and we work hard to develop our curricula, and to create effective and attractive learning environments for our students. The School of HCA is recognised for its world-class research. In the last Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), History ranked 3rd in the UK, Classics ranked 5th and half of the Archaeology staff were assessed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally-excellent’.
