Imagine working in an environment where your contribution is so far reaching that you will be changing the world - this is reality - if you choose.

As a Technician in our Mechanical Workshop, you will be working alongside leaders in their discipline and will support world class education and research. You will be responsible for aiding staff and students in the manufacture of bespoke components and equipment for experimental and research purposes that will be used in all environments from beneath the oceans, cleanrooms, high voltage labs to outer space and everything in between.

To be successful, you will be an experienced machinist having completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship with a minimum City & Guilds/ NVQ Level 4 in Mechanical Engineering. You will be able to use your skills and experience to manufacture complex and high precision work, machining components from specialist materials using a range of conventional machine tools such as Centre Lathes and Vertical Mills. Ideally with experience of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining including multi-axis CNC Mills, CNC Lathes and EDM. The ability to programme, set and operate would be highly beneficial although training could be provided. You will also possess excellent hand skills.

You will  be a confident communicator able to explain technical issues to those less experienced and where English may be the users second language. Pitching in to solve unique experimental manufacture and design solutions will be your second nature and you will always be looking to deliver effective results in the most efficient way and enhancing your customers' experience.

You will have excellent time management skills to be able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment. You will be used to working to tight tolerances and independently producing one off components to engineering drawings.

In return we will offer you career development and opportunities to enhance your skills, and a friendly and supportive work environment which provides work-life balance.

You will join a small inclusive team that embraces diversity and the benefits this brings. In support of this due consideration will be given to those who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness.

The School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award in recognition of its continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering. ECS provides a unique, friendly and supportive environment. We have a range of staff development programmes and a unique mentoring and wellbeing scheme.
