The role

The Teaching Laboratory Technician will be part of the team responsible for the preparation, delivery and support of activities taking place in Teaching Laboratories in the School of Chemistry. We are a diverse and welcoming team that is passionate about delivering excellent service. The post holder will be required to provide essential technical support in the laboratory and trouble shoot any problems to ensure the smooth and effective running of the service. The labs are in use for a range of activities through the year, providing service to a variety of laboratory users making this an exciting and vibrant environment.

What will you be doing?

  • Work in line with relevant Health and Safety guidelines
  • Contribute to reviewing and writing risk assessments and local rules
  • Maintain stocks of materials and consumables
  • Maintain and service equipment
  • Prepare laboratory for delivery of practical classes
  • Recognise and resolve problems, including complex issues (fault diagnostics, process improvement)
  • Provide assistance and technical support to laboratory users
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of laboratory users
  • Contribute technical knowledge and experience to the design and delivery of excellent lab experience

You should apply if

You have a background in Chemistry and solid grounding in instrumentation especially physical chemistry techniques particularly in spectroscopic methods and measurements as well as electrochemistry. Previous experience of working in teaching-lab based environment would be desirable but not essential. You will be highly organised with excellent time management, communication and multi-tasking skills. You will need to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team. Proven experience of completing tasks to a high level of accuracy, with attention to detail and methodical approach to work is essential. Innovative approach to work and ability to multi-task effectively are essential parts of this role.
