Applications are invited for an EPSRC funded post-doctoral position, situated within the Engineering Department at Lancaster University, to work on project entitled “REACTION – Radiation tolerant rapid criticality monitoring”. The project is funded through the UK Japan Civil Nuclear Research Programme and involves a Japanese partner at Shizuoka University, in addition to a UK industry partner. Some international travel to/from Japan will be expected.
The project aims to develop and deploy a radiation-hard sensor system capable of in-situ, real-time detection of fast neutrons in a high gamma-flux environment and demonstrate its ability to perform rapid recriticality detection. To achieve this, the key innovative features of this project are: (i) Model, design and commission of detectors optimised to maximise radiation hardness and to minimise gamma saturation (UK focus); (ii) Design and commission a state-of-the-art radiation tolerant, multichannel, digital analyser based on an optoelectronic gate array (Japan focus); and (iii) Deploy a proprietary real-time algorithm on to the commissioned digital analyser (Industry focus).
You will join a research team led by Dr. Michael Aspinall, studying novel detector systems and real-time analysis applicable to nuclear science and engineering. The position is available to scientists with a PhD in physics, nuclear or electronic engineering. Post-doctoral experience is not essential.
