This position is available for two years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to join the McKendry group at University College London (www.themckendrylab.com) and the i-sense EPSRC IRC in Early Warning Sensing Systems for Infectious Diseases, a large national interdisciplinary research programme https://www.i-sense.org.uk/ . This exciting research position will be responsible for advanced nanomaterials for ultra-sensitive disease detection, including SARS-CoV-2, HIV, TB and neglected tropical diseases such as Cholera.

All candidates must have an outstanding track record in creative, original independent research of the highest quality, ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders in the UK and internationally, the ability to multi-task and organise their work to meet deadlines. The position is based at the London Centre for Nanotechnology UCL and funded by i-sense, EPSRC Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration in Agile Early Warning Sensing Systems for Infectious Diseases and AMR, and benefits from a large scale multidisciplinary project involving over 50 scientists, engineers and clinicians from UCL, Imperial College, Newcastle University, in conjunction with Public Health England and industrial partners.

The exciting research position is responsible for interdisciplinary research into new nanomaterials for ultra-sensitive disease diagnosis. The job will also be required to write papers, grants and to supervise students. The post holder will actively follow UCL policies including Equal Opportunities and Race Equality policies and maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations. The post holder will carry out any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by Prof Rachel McKendry and any changes to the duties will be made in consultation with the post holder. Applicants should have a PhD (or submitted thesis) in chemistry, physics, engineering, material science or a relevant subject (or at least have submitted their thesis) and expertise in nanomaterials for early disease diagnosis. The ability to multi-task and organise own work with minimal supervision to meet deadlines is essential. Also, essential is evidence of independent contributions to research projects such as driving original ideas forward, excellent communication skills, a good understanding of statistics and wet lab experience.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B £32,217 - £33,958 per annum including London Allowance with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis per annum including London Allowance.
