Research Assistant/ Research Associate (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - C.I.M.R. Clinical Neurosciences, Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR)

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £27,116 to £40,927
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 16th November 2021
Closes: 2nd December 2021
Job Ref: SD28978

The successful candidate will join a world-leading, multidisciplinary research team located at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR). The team headed by Prof Peter St George-Hyslop works on the molecular/cellular biology, biochemistry and structural biology of proteins involved in normal neuronal and microglial function and in human neurodegenerative diseases.

The long term goal of the program is to understand how physiological and pathological post-translational modification and disease associated mutations in proteins encoded by genes associated with neurodegeneration injure neurons and glia.  The present project will principally focus on intrinsically disordered proteins expressed in neurons and microglia that cause neurodegeneration.

Examples are those described in our recent publications (Neuron, 2015; Cell, 2018, Cell 2019; Nature Nanotechnology 2021; Nature Communications 2021).

The person appointed must hold a BSc degree or higher in molecular/cell biology or related subject.

A knowledge of standard molecular biological, cell biological and biochemical techniques (e.g. cloning, western blotting and tissue culture) is essential. Knowledge of human iPSC-derived microglial and/or neuronal culture methods, of biochemical techniques required to interrogate their intracellular signalling pathways would be an asset.

The successful candidate will join a highly interactive lab and will be expected to participate in open academic discussions, and in the implementation, analysis and troubleshooting of experiments.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2022 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
