The role

The Leading for Impact Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for developing and executing empirical and conceptual research projects on leading for impact to identify strategies and practices by which individuals and organisations transform unjust or unsatisfactory systems through social innovation and social entrepreneurship. Dr Marya Besharov will serve as PI for the project and the work will be collaborative with her and others on the Skoll Centre team.

The postholder will be involved in activities that span the entire spectrum of the research process, including reviewing relevant literature to identify critical research questions, developing appropriate research designs, gathering and analysing data, developing new insights based on systematic analysis, and writing up and disseminating these insights to a variety of academic and non-academic audiences. A core focus of the work will be on producing insights that are both academically rigorous and practically relevant, and that are grounded in lived, learned and practiced expertise. Whilst a variety of research methods and analytic techniques may be used, the primary focus will be on in-depth, qualitative inductive analysis based on interview, observation and archival data collected from participating field sites.

The postholder will have opportunities to interact with and contribute to the wider community of researchers at Saïd Business School working on related topics. In addition, as a member of the Skoll Centre team, the postholder will engage with students and social impact practitioners, including contributing to the design and delivery of curricular and co-curricular teaching and engagement activities, including marquee convenings such as the Skoll World Forum.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the PI, Dr. Marya Besharov, Professor of Organisations and Impact, the Skoll Centre Postdoctoral Fellow, Leading for Impact, will undertake the following activities:

  • Contribute to empirical and conceptual research projects on leading for impact, including:
    • Identifying research questions that are relevant to academic and practitioner audiences
    • Developing appropriate research designs
    • Gathering and analysing complex qualitative and/or mixed methods data from a variety of sources
    • Generating novel, empirically grounded insights that extend existing concepts in the research literature
    • Writing academic articles for peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and books, as well as practitioner articles and reports for mainstream media outlets focused on business and social impact
    • Disseminating research insights to academic and practitioner audiences through presentations at national and international conferences, meetings and seminars
  • Work with the PI and the Skoll Centre team to support the development of a long-term research, education and engagement strategy related to leading for impact
  • Contribute to curricular and co-curricular teaching and learning on relevant topics (leadership, social entrepreneurship, social innovation and impact)

While there will be some flexibility in the allocation of time across these areas of responsibility, the postholder will be expected to spend most of their time (approximately 70%) on direct research activities, with the remainder (approximately 30%) dedicated to supporting the Centre’s long-term strategy and contributing to relevant teaching and learning initiatives.
