Proteomics Bioinformatician (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR)

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £27,116 to £40,927 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 19th November 2021
Closes: 5th December 2021
Job Ref: SA29057

The Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR) is a cross-departmental research institute. Part of the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, CIMR is located in a dedicated research building on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. At the interface between laboratory research and the clinic, CIMR's mission is to determine the molecular mechanisms of disease in order to advance human health. To achieve this, we leverage deep collaborations between basic and clinician scientists, built on shared interests, outstanding core facilities and an inclusive, supportive working environment.

The CIMR Proteomics Facility strives to meet the evolving demands of internal and external Users in a rapidly-developing field. The Facility operates several Orbitrap mass spectrometers plus a wide variety of software tools ranging from commercial packages to custom scripts.

An opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Proteomics Bioinformatician to join our small team. The post holder will support and develop our expanding repertoire of software tools to meet User need.  Applicants must be educated to a degree level and ideally have a post-graduate qualification in a field requiring analysis of large datasets.

The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of statistics as applied to large datasets. They will use commercial software to process data generated by the Facility and will interact with Users to interpret and explain data, assisting with data post-processing and presentation, commonly using R. While a background in life sciences is not critical, an understanding of mass spectrometry-driven proteomics would be beneficial and applicants with experience of proteomic mass spectrometry are particularly encouraged to apply.  Full details can be found in the further information document.

For appointment at the higher grade, candidates must additionally have substantial experience in processing and handling proteomic data and have a PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent experience.  However, candidates without this level of expertise will be considered for appointment at the lower grade with the prospect of promotion once full performance of duties is achieved.  In either case, the successful candidate must be enthusiastic, adaptable, dedicated to providing an excellent service for Facility Users, and prepared to learn and apply new techniques and approaches as required.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until January 2025 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
