General summary/purpose  

The postholder will hold a high interest in animal care and have previous experience in animal husbandry within a research environment. This role will be based in the Biological Support Unit (BSU), where the successful candidate will assist with basic husbandry routines as well as contribute to the upkeep of the Facility. 

They will have great knowledge and understanding of The Animal Scientific Procedures Act 1986 and hold and maintain a Home Office Personal Licence, modules AB&C. 

To maintain high standards of hygiene levels and best practice animal welfare within the BSU. To ensure and monitor these are kept in accordance with legal requirements. 

The post holder will be responsible for the supervision of staff, other categories of workers (i.e. maintenance staff) and visitors who have been authorised by Management to access the BSU.  

The post holder will report to the Facility Manager and ultimately to the Lab Director and CSO.This is a full–time position based in the King’s Cross area of London, offering a competitive salary, private healthcare scheme, bonus scheme, Employee Stock Ownership Plan’s, enhanced annual leave and more. 

Responsibilities  

  • To carry out the daily cleaning and maintenance of laboratory animals 
  • To maintain biosecurity within the facility  
  • To assist in the provision of training and assessment of other members of Staff 
  • Maintain transgenic breeding colonies to ensure 3R’s are always applied 
  • Responsible for reporting welfare concerns to the NACWO and Facility Manager  
  • To maintain regular animal and consumable Inventories 
  • To operate the mechanical cleaning of cages 
  • To prepare cages for use and distribute cages around the Facility 
  • To carry and ensure housekeeping/cleaning duties are carried out and maintained following strict hygiene regimes and to a high standard 
  • To clean rooms within the Facility and handle waste disposal  
  • To accurately maintain records within Axovia’s animal management systemwith particular reference to the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, in house re-charging records and animal breeding data 
  • To carry out any other duties which are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or Head of Department. 
  • The post holder may be required to work outside normal working hours and at weekends/public holidays on a pre-defined attendance rota, to ensure BSU is satisfactorily maintained. This involves ‘lone working’. 

Requirements  

Essential: 

  • A commitment to the highest standards of animal care, welfare, and management  
  • Have a thorough understanding of the Animals Scientific Procedures Act A(SP)A 1986  
  • Must be an ‘active’ Personal Licence Holder (PIL) under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. 
  • Possession of a valid Home Office Personal Licence 
  • Minimum of 5 A-C grade GCSE’s 
  • Have achieved IAT level 3/MIAT as a minimum 
  • Experience in maintaining Transgenic Colonies  
  • Committed to a career in Animal Technology and continued professional development   
  • Punctual, reliable and hold strong communication and organisational skills 
  • Display an ability to work effectively independently or as part of a team  
  • Computer literate 
  • Proactive and self-motivated 
  • A focused individual with great attention to detail 
  • Adaptable, enthusiastic, and approachable 
  • Good at problem solving 

Preferred 

  • Experience in performing procedures
