Job Description

What is the role?

The Head of Teaching and Learning will ensure that Free2Learn provides learners with a carefully planned, high-quality course offerings, scoped to available funding. The courses will meet learners’ needs, with mapped progression routes and successful destinations and outcomes.

You will lead and monitor the teaching, assessment, learning and delivery across the whole FE spectrum of courses that Free2Learn provides. It’s important to ensure appropriate assessment practices are in place for all learners. You will also ensure that teaching targets are set, owned and met. 

Key Role Responsibilities 

  1. Lead on the development of a carefully planned curriculum offer, course programmes and provision, scoped to demand and with assured funding 
  2. Ensure effective target setting, monitoring and control processes for staff utilisation, class size and other key performance indicators
  3. Liaise closely with Marketing and Learner Services to ensure that effective market intelligence informs planning and progress and to ensure effective curriculum engagement with promotional events
  4. Lead a culture of excellence in assessment, teaching and learning, promoting high standards of achievement and sharing of best practice and assuring positive outcomes and destinations. Take an active role in assessment development
  5. Lead and manage delivery of the Employability FE curriculum, ensuring the best quality learning and assessment experience to quality standards.
  6. Provide curriculum leadership to ensure that assessment, learning and curriculum development across and within the different departments is coherent and consistent with F2L’s strategic plan, directorate priorities, operational plans, self assessment reviews and development plans
  7. Fully engage with the needs of the learners, employers and the wider community to ensure the appropriate FE learning offer, and keep under review local and national developments, reporting on those which may affect F2L’s curriculum offer and quality of teaching, training and learning.
  8. Ensure an effective coaching programme and ensure all learners are given effective support to overcome learning barriers
  9. Work closely with the Head of Quality to ensure that observation, staff development programmes and quality improvement activities across teaching and learning is comprehensive and effective in spreading best practice, leading by example.
  10. Ensure that administrative and data requirements and appropriate systems are developed and adhered to and that there is effective team work with other areas of F2L to ensure best standards of operational effectiveness.
  11. Ensure that stretching but achievable learner retention, achievement and success and progression targets are set, reviewed and performance is consistently improved.

Skills Required 

  • Degree or equivalent vocational qualification
  • Teaching Qualification
  • Experience of working on back-to-work programmes
  • Experience of effective curriculum management 
  • Effective experience in FE with evidence of significant achievement both in terms of outcomes and VFM/resource management
  • Knowledge and understanding of funding and developments in FE, Skills and Employment
  • Thorough understanding and experience of employer needs, work based learning, employability programmes and enterprise
  • Ability to think strategically
  • Innovative and creative approach to work
  • Experience of external validation, Ofsted or other external monitoring or inspection work would be an advantage
