The Oxford Motor Neuron Disease (MND) research group is seeking a Research Assistant who will be responsible for the provision of biofluid research support, leading in the processing and biobanking of biosamples (including blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid and skin biopsies) from patients seen in one of the largest UK MND tertiary referral clinics.
The candidate must be keen to take on responsibility for curating a biofluid resource that underpins a large number of research studies and to lead in the delivery of our candidate biomarker assays. They will be responsible for performing quality-assured measurements on a variety of biomarkers in human biosamples using immunoassays, mainly ELISA and electrochemiluminescence (MSD) technologies. The Research Assistant will also contribute ideas for new biomarkers through literature search and keeping up to date with current ALS publications, they will also communicate with customer and scientific support and issues arise with laboratory consumables and immunoassays.
It is essential that the successful candidate hold a degree in a relevant biological science discipline and have previous laboratory experience working with human biosamples. It is vital that the postholder has awareness of relevant legislation around human sample banking and storage and possess sufficient specialist knowledge of ELISA implementation to deliver quality-assured candidate biomarker assays. It would be of benefit to the role if the applicant has some knowledge of MND or wider neurodegenerative disorders and has previous experience with database software (e.g. REDCap, Microsoft Access).
The post is part-time (0.675FTE) for a fixed-term for 12 months in the first instance.
