About the team/job

EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking a Business Intelligence Analyst to provide a data-driven approach to support decision making and project management to support the delivery of the EMBL-EBI data services portfolio.

The EMBL-EBI makes a variety of biomolecular data openly available to support life sciences research via resources that are used millions of times each day. They operate under diverse funding, partnership and governance models, playing key roles in large international research projects, European data infrastructures, and within the EMBL 2022-2026 scientific programme.

On a technical level, the resources have deep interdependencies and are run by a staff of around 600 people, organised into teams and larger sections. This is a complex organisation that also has many outward facing responsibilities, for example, providing input and leadership in a variety of forums on matters relating to data management, data reuse, and open science.  

Your role

The Business Intelligence Analyst will initiate and maintain information on various aspects of data resource usage, data resource workflows, funding, staffing, budget use, and impact analysis pertaining to the EMBL-EBI services. The intelligence gathered will support and inform the strategic goals of the EMBL-EBI services. This will require you to work with Associate Directors and other senior staff across the organisation to prioritise and translate information requirements into specifications for data gathering and analysis. A collaborative approach to the role will therefore be essential. You will perform data analysis and present results in both internal and external management and governance forums. If you are passionate about open science and how best to both deliver and demonstrate the impact of open data resources, then this is an opportunity to contribute to the effective management of these services.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Inform strategy for EMBL-EBI services by developing and maintaining analytics of various aspects of service delivery
  • Continuous monitoring of key indicators required to demonstrate the impact of  EMBL-EBI data service delivery
  • Analysis support feeding into specific strategic projects (e.g. economic impact analysis and supporting ad hoc queries as required
  • Engage with a diverse set of teams across the EMBL-EBI to develop and specify questions, implement and enhance protocols for data gathering, and deliver informative results 
  • Specifically working closely with the dedicated EMBL-EBI capital project team to develop and maintain impact reporting for large capital investment projects. This will include developing dashboard reporting for external funders to highlight the progress on project objectives. 
  • Curating and validating the integrity of data gathered
  • Data analysis, extracting meaningful insights from data
  • Project management of data gathering and monitoring
  • Implementation of systems to manage, maintain and report on analytical data
  • Communication of results to the EMBL-EBI management and external strategic projects, via reports and presentations, as required.
  • Supervise consultants or interns, as required

The post will be based at the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton near Cambridge; however, it is a requirement of employment that the post holder be prepared to travel. 

You have

  • PhD or Masters degree in a scientific discipline 
  • Professional experience in business analysis and/or project management. 
  • Domain experience in a science-led setting (such as a research institute, pharma, science publishing)
  • Demonstrated experience of data gathering and visualisation for analysis
  • Demonstrated communication skills - written and verbal in a variety of settings 
  • Experience with tools such as Advanced Excel, R
  • Excellent organisational, prioritisation and interpersonal skills
  • Team player with developed stakeholder engagement skills 

You might also have

  • Experience in life science data infrastructure provision
