Research Associate (Remote Sensing)

Manchester Metropolitan University - School of Science and the Environment

Location: Manchester
Salary: £31,406 to £35,326 Grade 7
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 25th November 2021
Closes: 16th December 2021
Job Ref: eArcu-4293

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in remote sensing (satellite) analysis of glacier-volcano interactions. The post is available for a fixed-term duration of 15 months, and is supported by a Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant (‘Using glaciers to identify, monitor, and predict volcanic activity').

The principal role of the PDRA is to develop and apply remote sensing methods to investigate volcano-glacier interactions, and to publish associated journal articles. Given the emphasis on tool development, a background in remote sensing and/or GIS is essential. An interest in glaciology and/or volcanology would also be useful.

The applicant will be based in Manchester (UK) working with the project leader and PhD student, but will also have the opportunity to spend time in Aberdeen (UK), where a co-investigator is based.

Applicants should possess (or be very close to obtaining) a doctorate in earth/geo sciences, remote sensing, physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related discipline. A background in any of the following will be of advantage: satellite remote sensing, image analysis, GIS, programming, artificial intelligence or big data analysis.

In addition to their salary, the postholder will receive financial support to attend international conferences and workshops.

Please direct enquiries to Dr Iestyn Barr (i.barr@mmu.ac.uk)

As part of your application, you will be required to upload a cover letter, CV and details of two referees.
