Applications are invited for the position of Driving Electrical Revolution Industrialisation Centre Operations Director within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham.

The University of Nottingham was successful in securing substantial investments in new experimental facilities for Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives. This includes funding for a UK Electrification of Aerospace Propulsion Facility (UK-EAPF) and for equipment as part of the Driving the Electrical Revolution Midlands Industrialisation Centre (DER-IC). These facilities will be located in the new Power Electronics and Electrical Machines Centre (PEMC) on the Jubilee Campus of the University of Nottingham.

In this role, you will provide overall operational leadership for the DER-IC Project and its facilities at Nottingham for both for research and development needs in line with the DER-IC objectives. You will lead a team of engineers, business development and programme managers to work closely with the Power Electronics, Machines and Control Research Group, other University Departments and with industry (over a range of TRLs) to grow activity in the Centre, which will initially house a wide range of testing equipment including:

(a) MW-class electrical drives instrumented dynamometers for traction and propulsion applications.

(b) Insulation and Magnetic Material characterisation equipment

(c) Power Electronics characterisation and test equipment

(d) Electrical Machines manufacturing, characterisation and test equipment

You will also develop and implement a strategy to run the Centre, strengthening external reputation and relationships, and deliver the forecast growth in commercial testing and characterisation activities. Through effective management of budgets and resources and identification of new income-generating opportunities, you will maximise the potential of the new centre and its facilities, secure its financial sustainability and meet the KPIs set by funders.

The successful candidate will have be responsible for the development and delivery of Nottingham’s DER-IC strategy, will have overall responsibility for business development, operations, resourcing and management of the Centre, have operational management of commercial and research test and development services, manage relationships with external and internal customers: project development, pricing, contracts, services, deal with arising issues, and support project planning.

  • Substantial experience of managing a team and service.
  • Evidence of essential knowledge in the field of electric drives.
  • Experience of budget management.
  • Experience of developing solutions and contributing to strategic planning
  • Well-developed understanding of PEMD applications and testing requirements.
  • Substantial understanding of contracts negotiation and management

This post will be offered on full-time basis (36.25 hours), initially for a 2 year period and with an expectation of it being extended thereafter based on successful delivery of the centre’s strategy.
