We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic post-doctoral researcher to use single-molecule fluorescence microscopy approaches for examining transmembrane molecular machines. This is an instrumentation focussed position that will be based primarily in the Horrocks group working in close collaboration with the Cockroft group.

The Opportunity:

The successful applicant will have, or be close to being awarded, a PhD in Chemistry, Biophysics, or a related discipline. They will be adept in considering the behaviour and operation of chemistry and biology at the single-molecule level. Prior experience in single-molecule fluorescence microscopy is essential. Knowledge or experience of working with patch-clamp detection is desirable, but not essential. The candidate must demonstrate a desire to lead, the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team and possess excellent communication skills. The successful applicant will engage in collaborations with Scott Cockroft (Edinburgh) and internationally with researchers in Wrocław (Poland), Strasbourg (France), and Bologna (Italy).

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Excellent skills and experience in configuring and collecting data with single-molecule fluorescence microscopes and associated instrumentation.
  • Knowledge/experience of the patch clamp technique is desirable, but not essential.
  • Skilled in the analysis of single-molecule images, trajectories and data sets.
  • Able to operate successfully at the interface of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering.
  • Excellent communication and written skills, with experience in preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
